Hailstorm: Click Below for Advice on How to Stay Safe

Hailstorms can strike incredibly fast. Falling at speeds of up to 100 km/h, it doesn’t take long for a hailstone to drop from the sky to your doorstep. So what can you do to help protect your family, home and property from hailstorm dangers? Here’s a quick guide on what you can do before, during and after a hailstorm arrives. Watch the video or read the guide below.

What should you do before a hailstorm?

There’s action you can take to reduce your risk of danger and damage ahead of a hail forecast.

  • If possible, be sure to move any cars, RVs or other vehicles into a covered area, like a shed or garage.
  • Hail and high winds often go hand-in-hand. Secure items in your yard (like patio furniture or stray toys) that could turn into projectiles in heavy gusts.
  • Bring your pets indoors or into a covered area for their safety.
  • Once hail begins to fall, stop any prep you might be doing and go inside.

What can you do during a hailstorm?

When a hailstorm begins, there are things you can do to stay safe and reduce your risk:

  • Put safety first and head indoors.
  • Choose a place to wait out the storm that’s a safe distance from windows, glass doors and skylights. This goes for any furry friends too.
  • Keeping drapes and blinds closed offers an additional layer of protection.
  • If you experience a power outage, turn off your appliances to reduce your chance of a power surge when the electricity returns.
  • If you’re in your vehicle during a hailstorm, shelter’s still important. Pull into a covered structure like a gas station or parking garage and ride the hail out.
  • If you can, position your vehicle in a way that your windshield is taking the brunt of the damage — they’re often reinforced — and not side or back windows.

What should you do after a hailstorm?

Hailstorms can bring stones as small as peas and as large as grapefruits, so not every storm will look the same. No matter the size of the hailstone, there are some things you should consider when dealing with the aftermath:

  • Once the hailstorm passes, you can take care of cleaning or damages if conditions allow.
  • If you’ve experienced a power outage, take the precaution of turning off electronics and appliances to prevent damage caused by a power surge.
  • If you detect a gas leak, shut off the valves in your home and contact your energy company.
  • If you have damaged property, be sure to photograph it for your insurance claim needs.
  • Keep receipts of any clean-up or other related costs associated with the hail damage.
  • Contact TD Insurance if you have a claim to file.
